It’s time to dim the lights, throw on a grown-and-sexy, red silk robe, light some candles, pour a glass of champagne, and get ready for a sensual, steamy, heart-pounding night of…blogging (flashback ends abruptly)…
I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! This very day, one year ago I started thejapanguy.com. I remember sitting down just after my 30th birthday wondering if this was what my life was going to be. “Is this it?” I thought to myself. I had this overwhelming concern that I was destined to be “just a teacher” for the rest of my life.Maybe it was the fear of getting older that was hitting me more than anything. Honestly, I DO think I am destined to be a teacher (of sorts) and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just because I’m a teacher doesn’t mean I’m damned, LOL. There are some wonderful men and women whose teachings changed the very world as we know it. I don’t know if I’ll ever do anything on the level of these people, but deep down I KNOW I’m not destined to be bound to a classroom for the rest of my life.
With the Japan Guy I wanted to create something that would force me outside of the “same old same” that I was doing everyday. Teaching, coming home, sleeping, and doing it all over again the next day.
I wanted to make a site that would speak to people, that would reach them, that would be educational, informative and entertaining. I didn’t have a clue about how I was going to go about such a grand task. I heard the saying somewhere that “You don’t have to be great to get started, but you have get started to be great.” So that’s what I did…I got started.
I didn’t have anything fancy to give, it was just me, my thoughts, and a keyboard. I knew that writing had been a passion of mine for quite some time, a passion that I have generally kept to myself. Coupling that passion with an extreme interest in Japan…the foreign country that I was living and breathing everyday…led me to start this very blog.
Nearly 400 articles and over 186,000 views later, I feel like The Japan Guy is starting to grow into something that I can be truly proud of, and hopefully something that the readers can be proud of too (fingers crossed 🙂 ). Without a doubt, I know this year is going to be something truly special.
This is my chance to say thank you to the best readers in the whole world. Thank you so much for supporting the Japan Guy. I appreciate all of you more than you know. I love how some of you have come and put up some incredibly thoughtful words of wisdom, how others of you have posted some hilarious comments, the useful advice, the corrections…everything! Without your support I the Japan Guy wouldn’t be what has become in such a short time.
I WANT TO GIVE A SUPER BIG, JAPAN GUY THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!
Erica, Amanda, Gareth, Tony, Robby, Isaku, Abasa, and Illya (coming soon) thank you for taking time out of your schedule to do an interview with me. I enjoyed talking with all of you, and thank you for sharing your insight.
