Happy New Year Everybody! 皆さん明けましておめでとうございます!

By Donnie | Articles

I’m officially still on my Japan Guy Winter Break, but couldn’t help myself, I had to write this post.

Do you know how to say Happy New Year in Japanese? It’s Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu, or 明けましておめでとうございます!

I was talking with my friend Kinya the other day and he was saying what a crazy year it’s been. We started talking about some of the major events this year. The biggest one that come to mind were the major earthquake and tsunami that devastated parts of Japan back in March, Osama Bin Laden’s death in May, Muammar al-Gaddafi’s death in October, and recently…the death of Kim Jong Il. I don’t know why the biggest things I can think of all have a negative connotation, but sometimes those are the easiest things to remember.

2011 was a great year for the Japan Guy. I have gotten to share and talk with more readers than ever before. I also was able to release my first product, The Ultimate Japanese How-To Guide, which I soon after decided to give away for free.

I wonder what 2012 will bring? Well, 2012 has already brought its first earthquake. Around 2:32pm today there was an earthquake which I’m hearing was a 7.0, but I don’t think the magnitude was a 7.0 by the time we felt it here in Tsukuba. It was one of those longer/stronger ones that was enough to tingle my Spidey Senses.

What was your 2011 like? In you opinion what were the biggest events of 2011?

I’m excited and ready to hit the ground running in 2012. It’s going to be the best year yet!

  • I also wrote about 2011’s news stories:

I agree that, for those of us in Japan at least, the March 11 earthquake was the year’s biggest news.

Speaking of which, did you feel that earthquake today? It was kinda big.

    Happy New Year, Donald! どうぞ、今年もよろしくお願いいたします。

Happy New Year Donald!! After reading about the earthquake in the news, I figured Japan might be a sign as to what’s to come over here in California. Be safe out there man!!

For me, 2011 was an up and down, then right back up year. Started off the year with a job, got laid off a month later, relationship turmoil followed, a lot of drama after that, then found myself just having to sit down and refocus. Now I’m somewhat back at the top of the mountain again and happier. My goals for this year is to concentrate more on managing my finances better, study more japanese(I noticed I have gotten better understanding it but still can’t speak a lick of it -.-), and hopefully find what I’m looking for career-wise.

What about you Donald? What are your goals for 2012?

  • 2012 is a time of new beginnings for me. I’m really pushing into my studies. We’ve had earthquakes here in the states in areas that’ve never had them before! It’s kind of scary.

I’ve made a few online buddies in Japan that I definitely want to meet and hang out with when I go!

  • This was the biggest year of my life. My first year abroad, hell, my first year on my own really, and all the challenges and triumphs that came with that. I’m really looking forward to this year and the new insights and growth it will bring.
