After arriving home and waking up after a good night’s sleep at my Mom’s house, I brushed my teeth, groggily walked into the kitchen and my eyes darted directly to the colorful boxes on top of the fridge. I woke up instantly when I saw my good friend Lucky the Leprechaun smiling down at me….LUCKY CHARMS!!! I pulled down that box to find another American, overly-sweetened, cereal delight: Reese’s Puffs cereal. I rubbed my eyes to make sure this wasn’t some kind of mirage. It wasn’t!
I proceeded to lay waste to two bowls of Lucky Charms. Am I the only person that has a funny way of eating Lucky Charms? Has anyone ever eaten all the light-brown, wheaty, less-tasty pieces first, and left all the sweet marshmallows until the end? That’s my Lucky Charms “technique that I’ve had since I was a kid.” Sometimes I wondered if they’d just make a cereal that was all marshmallows. I guess that wouldn’t be too healthy, though. Later that morning, I also downed two bowls of Reese’s Puffs cereal. Cereal Heaven Praises be!!!
I told myself when I got here, all food bets are off. Any junk food I can get my hands on, any food craving that materializes will be unforgivingly satisfied. Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, Butterfingers & Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (I haven’t been able to find the peanut butter candies in Japan), Cinnabons, Papa John’s Pizza, Chic-Fil-A Waffle fries, McDonald’s Milkshakes. I wholeheartedly expect to consume all kinds of calories, and gain all kinds of weight while I’m here. So when you so my first post upon arriving back to Japan, please don’t be surprised to see me looking like the chocolate version of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man (do you remember him from the Ghostbusters movie back in the day?).
If you’ve been in Japan for a while, what foods do you miss most? Inquiring minds want to know
And vice versa, if you’ve moved back to your home country from Japan, what Japanese foods do you miss the most?
Please don’t feel like you have to skimp on the scrumptious little details. I know I’d love to hear them, and I’m sure others would, too.
Well, all this food talk is making me hungry…I think it’s time for me to eat now!
