VIDEO TRANSCRIPT I wanna tell you about this girl that I used to do date. When I was little younger. I’m not old now. I’m still young, but when I younger…there was this girl I used to date. And…Wow, what can I say about her? She was everything I wanted in a girl. She was really smart, she was cute, wasn’t high maintenance whatsoever. She just liked to hang out. She didn’t need anything special. We just enjoyed being in each other’s company and that was enough. But one day she came up to me and she said “Donald, I’m sorry but I can’t see you anymore.” I was devastated. With tears in my...

TsukubaMatsuri2011

Here is a video of Tsukuba Matsuri 2011. I got more of a look at the festival during the day this time around. But the night show is always a pretty nice view. You can click the link in the related items section (beneath the post) to see last year’s Tsukuba Matsuri. But without further ado, here is a video look at Matsuri Tsukuba 2011: Thanks for watching! See you tomorrow. Donald Ash P.S.-A got a little bit more footage than I expected to, so I’ll make a second video that you can check out in the Japan Guy email newsletter. If you haven’t signed up already, on the home page you simply enter...

PIZZA HUT PIZZA IN JAPAN!!

PIZZA HUT PIZZA IN JAPAN!!

I just love pizza! Pepperoni, Cheese, Chicken, Supreme, Mayonnaise, Corn, Seafood. Wait!! Did you say Mayonnaise pizza, and seafood pizza? Yes, indeed I did. I don’t know what makes these types pizza toppings so appealing to Japanese people. I suspect that their palates must be accustomed to different tastes than Americans. I have been in Japan for over three years, and one of the cravings that I have from time to time is for a piping hot slice of GOOD pizza. Here in Tsukuba, Pizza La is one of the most popular pizza delivery chains, but I definitely wouldn’t say the pizza is the best. They have some really strange toppings too, some I can’t...

A Japan Guy Interview: “Life in Japan” featuring Tony Du (Parts 1 & 2)

I had another opportunity to interview another expat that I know and respect, Tony Du. Tony has been an expat in Japan for more than five years now and I figure what better way to get another view on life in Japan than by asking someone who’s been here longer than I have. I think it’s also interesting to hear what Tony says about being an Asian-American in Japan. Tony was at one time an AEON teacher as well, working in Tsukuba just like me. He has a lot of experiences to share, and I hope you enjoy the interview. If you have any questions for Tony, please leave them in the comments sections...

Today is May 5th, Kodomo No Hi (こどものひ/子供の日)

Today is May 5th and it’s Kodomo no Hi, こどものひ/子供の日! Kodomo no hi, also known as Children’s Day, is a national holiday that’s tied into Golden Week (one of Japan’s big holidays**). Initially Kodomo no hi was termed tangonosekku, たんごのせっく / 端午の節句, or the Boys Day Celebration. If you’ve read some of the earlier posts, there is also a Girl’s Day Celebration/Festival of Dolls known Hina Matsuri, ひなまつり / 雛祭り, that about two months prior on March 3rd. I don’t know exactly when the name of today’s holiday changed from Boy’s Day to Children’s Day, but now it’s a day that’s meant to celebrate all children to wish them happiness, health, and good luck....

A Depiction of Life as an Expat in Japan Through Nintendo Piano Music

Gareth and I had some time after our interview together, so he decided to do something special after we finished. He had been thinking of doing this, and I figured it was great idea. He’s an awesome piano player and has a good sense of humor (as you can probably tell). The funny thing is, these are some of the basic types of songs that Gareth can play. I’ve seen him really go to work on the piano. Maybe I haven’t even seen entirely what he’s capable of when he sits down a keyboard/piano, but needless to say, it’s always an entertaining session to watch. Take a look at his description of life as...

A Japan Guy Interview: Life in Japan, featuring Gareth Jones

I did an interview with my good friend Gareth Jones a little while back to get someone another take on what life in Japan is like. Because he’s been in Japan for nearly the exact same amount of time as I have, and because I worked with him for nearly three years, I figured Gareth would be a perfect person to share his thoughts and ideas with you. As much as I love writing and posting everyday, it’s good to hear another side from time to time. I hope to do more of these interviews to make the Japan Guy even more useful for more people. Having a guest here on my blog, might...

Am I Stupid for Having Stayed In Japan After the 2011 Japan Earthquake?

Am I Stupid for Having Stayed In Japan After the 2011 Japan Earthquake?

“Donald get out now!” “If I were you I’d be getting the hell outta dodge!” “Have you left yet?” “Be smart.” “Leave Japan now!” So many people have told me to get out of Japan while I still have a chance, but I haven’t left yet, why? There have been over 50 aftershocks recorded (a big one happened here in Tsukuba this morning), parts of Japan have been wiped out, the air has higher than normal radiation levels, vegetables and tap water have been contaminated. Why are you still in Japan? Well, I’ll tell you why. If I just up and leave based on uninformed frenzy then I’m going to be broke (having to...

The Square Enix Showcase: Shinjuku Japan

Per my friend, Karl’s, recommendation, I thought I’d take a little trip to Shinjuku and visit the Square Enix store. Since I had to pick up my HIV test results at the Minami Shinjuku Building (don’t worry, it was negative), and it just so happened that the Square Enix Showcase was about a 10-15 minute walk from Shinjuku station’s south exit…I figured “Why not?.” It would be a good way to see something more light-hearted after visiting the testing center. (Please see the official Square Enix Showcase map below.) After a nice, brisk walk I arrived at the Square Enix Showcase and Character Goods Shop. I was kind of expecting a bigger sign, but...
