At the end of last year I had my first Bonenkai with the elementary school teachers and simply put it was a blast. It’s always nice to relax with cool people, have good food, and do a some karaoke. This was the first time I’ve been to karaoke where there were no other English speakers and I really had a good time practicing my Japanese at the same time. It was a win win situation.
During karaoke two of the younger teachers sang a song that I REALLY want to learn. The name of this song is Aonori (青海苔) by Brief and Trunks (wait a second…brief and trunks, aren’t those expressions for underwear?!).
The song was extremely entertaining because of the cadence, and the speed. The words were so fast it seemed like even a native Japanese speaker might have a tough time with it. That’s exactly why I want to learn it, because of the challenge.
I looked up the song on YouTube and didn’t realize just how funny the lyrics were. The singers are admiring different women, they’re enchanted by their beauty, until…all of a sudden, they see something about the woman that turns them off. The cadence of the lyrics speeds up immediately after they singers notice what’s wrong. They sing about everything from seaweed and basil in a woman’s teeth, to having armpit hair (only on the right pit), to smelling like curry. I really found it funny. Check it out:
I know this isn’t going to be an easy one to learn, but I’m up for the challenge, I think
See you next time,
